Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work part time while taking the program?
Yes – to a point. Many students need to work part time to help support themselves while going to school. But because the program's work load is very heavy, we recommend limiting your part time job to about 8-10 hours/week. More hours means less time to spend on your learning and projects.
What kind of jobs do Web Design graduates get?
Most of our grads go to work in the areas of Marketing, Advertising, Design and Communications. "Junior Web Designer" is the most common first job for many graduates, but students with professional experience may move into higher level jobs immediately. Some graduates will work independently with their own clients, or do freelance work, but most of the Web Design grads go into full time jobs.
Do I need to buy a computer to take this program?
No, we give you so much lab access that you really don't need one! The Web Design students have a computer lab dedicated just to them. This studio is open 7 days a week from 7AM to 2AM. However, many of our students do own their own computers and do some of their homework off campus.
Can I get a deal on a computer and/or software through the College?
Yes! All enrolled full time students are eligible for educational pricing from Apple - either through an Apple Store or online. Additionally, Sheridan students may receive a copy of the full Adobe Creative Suite. Specific details change from year to year, and more info will be given to the class in the fall.
I only have a PC - is that a problem?
Not really. Although all our courses are taught on Macintosh computers, the major applications that we use are all from Adobe, so the same software is available for Mac and Windows. Production files are mostly interchangeable, and finished web sites are not platform specific. Fonts can be an issue however.
How much should I budget for books and supplies?
Once in the program your expenses are not that much. You will be required to buy a few text books, and to have an external portable storage device (ie a USB key, a pocket drive or iPod). By the end of the program, you will also need to purchase a domain and sign up with a hosting service. Budget about $500 for books, image rights and supplies.
Is this program offered part time?
No, it is only offered full time. The intensive, immersive learning experience is an important part of the Web Design program.
Will I be learning to build e-commerce and other data gathering sites?
No. This is not a web development course. We do not teach a great deal of coding or programming. You will be able to design for these types of sites, but only prototype the experience as opposed to fully implementing the back end. This is a specialization of its own.
I only have my Ontario Secondary School Certificate, but I have made a couple of sites/taken art classes at high school. Can I take this program?
No. And here's why: This is a Ontario Graduate Certificate program that is designed as a specialization year following a solid undergraduate education, and for professionals seeking skills enhancement. If you have a passion for design, you need to invest in your undergraduate qualifications. A good 3 or 4 year undergraduate program will build conceptual and technical skills, design methodology, creative problem solving, research and many other core skills necessary for a successful long term career in Web Design or any other area of the graphic arts.
